The Pointe de l'Aval in Haute-Provence is one of those mountains that don't seem feasible by mountainbike – but which then unexpectedly become a highlight. The summit is high above the Refuge de Chambreyon and pleases all those who like steep and high alpine routes.
Starting point of the tour is the pretty village Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye at the Col de Vars. From here, one rolls along the small road to Serenne and then climbs up to Fouillouse. Here, the route changes into a singletrail that is initially still a little steep, but then leads to the Refuge de Chambeyron with a moderate ascent. The bike only has to be carried in a few places, and in the meantime it is even possible to ride uphill on the trail. From the hut, one looks high up to the summit of Pointe de l'Aval and reflects on his plans. But plan is plan, and the ascent turns out to be gravelly and very steep, but it is well feasible. A little more than 600 metres in altitude one climbs from the hut up to the summit with the bike on one's shoulders. One is rewarded with the wonderful view over the lake landscape at the foot of the Tête de la Fréma. The subsequent descent leads almost to Fouillouse on the ascent route. The path is steep but easy to ride down to the Refuge. But a little above the village of Fouillouse, one ride straight out at a left turn and takes the singletrail down to the bank of the Ubaye. Along the bottom of the valley you reach the starting point again.
Tip: Combine the tour with the Tête de la Fréma and spend the night in the Refuge de Chambeyron.
