    Sparrhorn
    Description

The 3020 meter high Sparrhorn is enthroned high above Brig and above the foothills of the Aletsch Glacier. The summit region is very challenging on a mountainbike, but then follows an epic descent down to the center of Brig.

The start of the tour is on the Belalp, which can be reached from Brig first by post bus, then by cable car. At the beginning you sit in the saddle for a short time, but then you have to push until the top station of the chairlift. From there, the bike lies on your shoulders and you climb on a steep, stony but well passable path up to the Sparrhorn summit with a fantastic view of the Aletsch region and the opposite glacier peaks including the Matterhorn. The descent then continues to the Tyndall memorial on the ascent route. The section from the summit to the top station of the chairlift is extremely difficult and in places dangerous to ride. Afterwards, however, it becomes extremely fun. From the memorial you descend to the hotel and from there via Eggen to the village of Blatten. The downhill run always has some challenging parts. The final section from Blatten back to Brig is then much easier and faster. At the end, it leads along an old freight road directly to the center of Naters, the neighboring village of Brig.

    Hints:

    • The Sparrhorn is very popular with pedestrians who take the chairlift up to the top and then walk the last stretch to the top. Mountainbikers are strongly advised not to start this tour on a weekend or during the high season.
    • If you are on an e-mountainbike, you can take a cart track up to the chairlift station, but then you can leave your bike at the crossroads below the Sparrhorn and climb to the summit on foot.
