    Stockalperweg (Simplon)
    Description

The Simplon Pass is famous for the Stockalperweg, but there are wonderful alternatives to the south. The Simplon Südseite tour combines some of these trails and leads down to Iselle. Back to Brig it takes only a few minutes by train through the Simplon tunnel.

The starting point of the Simplon Südseite tour is the Brig train station, where you first get on the post bus and shuttle up to the Simplon pass. At the top of the pass, you change to the bicycle saddle and take the signposted and legendary Stockalperweg in the direction of Simplon Dorf. At Egga, just before the village of Simplon, however, you leave the Stockalperweg and head for the ascent to the avalanche barriers below the Glatthorn. This ascent initially leads along asphalt roads, then further up along gravel roads. 600 meters of altitude difference with a pleasant gradient are overcome in this way, until the downhill trail finally begins below the avalanche barriers. This trail is challenging at the beginning, but from the Hobielestafel it becomes an exceptionally fun supertrail. Later you follow a short stretch of the Chrummbacheri water line until the next trail highlight awaits you at Heji: the descent to Gabi. Here you meet the Stockalperweg again, follow it through the Gondo Gorge and finally reach Gondo. For the final section, you have to roll down the main road to Iselle for about four kilometers to get on the train and thus return to Brig after only 17 minutes.

Note: There is a promising high-level trail from the Simplon Pass that leads directly to the avalanche barriers below the Glatthorn. However, this path is heavily blocked and not suitable for mountainbikers.
