    Mäderlicke (Monte-Leone-Hütte)
    Description

The descent from the Mäderlicke down to Brig is one of the most attractive singletrail routes that the Oberwalis has to offer. You have to earn the fun with the foot ascent from the Simplon Pass to the Monte Leone Hut. It‘s tough, but in an exclusive glacier environment.

From the Simplonpass, which you have reached before by post bus from Brig, you go straight uphill into a pushing section. You walk along a irrigation channel – pushing your bike – towards the Chaltwasser glacier. Finally the path climbs steeper and from then on the bike lies mainly on the shoulders. The path is easily done on foot. In this way you climb up to the Chaltwasserlicke. The Kaltwasserlicke is the first highlight of the tour with views of the Chaltwassersee, the Chaltwasser Glacier and the Monte Leone above. The Monte Leone hut is also clearly visible. After refreshments, the last few metres follow up to Mäderlicke, the culmination of the tour. This is where the extraordinarily long and just as extraordinarily beautiful descent down to Brig begins. The first few metres are still a little rough, but the path then becomes increasingly flowy. At the top station of the Rothwald ski lift the timberline is reached, now the alpine trail turns into a fast path on velvety soft forest ground. But this is only the beginning! After the Ganterwald Restaurant, an extraordinarily long, flowy and almost perfectly laid out singletrail (Talweg Ganter) leads down to the Ganter Bridge. The trail fireworks continue immediately on the other side of the valley with the Ganter Höhenweg. The fun is marginally dulled by a short, steep ascent to Schallberg, only to then steer into the legendary Stockalperweg down to Brei. From the glacier region at the very top, one is now in a kind of Mediterranean climate. The final bouquet of fireworks is offered by the trail from Brei down to the Saltina River, from where you finally roll leisurely to the centre of Brig.
