    Description

The Stockhorn is one of the most beautiful and popular panoramic mountains of the Bernese Oberland. The summit can also be reached by mountain bike. The ascent and the descent into the Simmental valley are on first-class single tracks.

From Thun you initially travel via Almendingen and Amsoldingen to Blumenstein, where the long climb begins via the Tschingelhütte to the Gurnigel pass. This trip of just over 1000 meters of altitude can incidentally also be made by post bus. From the Gurnigel pass you take the alpine road up to Alp Obernünene and push your bike the final section to the Leitere pass. The following high trail to the Walalp is world class, with flowing sections alternating with tricky passages. Finally you pick the bike up again and climb the stairs up to the Stockhorn. The summit is worthwhile because of the phenomenal view. The descent then leads on an extensive single track downhill to Oberstockesee, followed again by a short climb, and then you take an enjoyable hiking trail down to Erlenbach. Via Oey and Wimmis you return to Thun or you can take the train and make the return trip on a comfortable seat.
Note: the route also requires map sheet Frutigland (31).
