    Description
    Piz Umbrail
    Description

The Goldsee trail, the Tibet Trail, the Bocchetta di Forcola – countless singletrail highlights are hidden around the Umbrailpass and the Stilfserjoch. In the shadow of these familiar routes stands the descent from Piz Umbrail into Val Mora. It is actually the true highlight of the region.

The Umbrailpass is best reached with the postal bus, but the 1125 metre climb can also be overcome under your own steam on the pass road. The crisp ascent phase begins only after the pass summit. You push and carry your bike on a singletrail for 500 metres up until the Piz Umbrail at 3033 metres above sea level. The climb is draining, but it now pays off. The descent to the Lai da Rims is an alpine super pass, the path winds manageably through the rugged mountain terrain. After Rims Lake, the route becomes a bit more technical, peppered with many switchbacks, but continues to be a good and entertaining ride. At length, you reach the stream in Val Vau, with over 1000 metres already behind you, and the forthcoming final segment will be known by many from tours to the famous Val Mora. After taking the first trails as a shortcut to the gravel road, follow this same road up to a mountain ridge, where it then continues to the right of the trail through a dense forest up to the edge of Sta. Maria.

    Note:
The summit ascent Piz Umbrail (3033 m) is a popular mountain hike. The municipality of Val Müstair has issued a recommendation to keep the route to the summit free  for hikers between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, thereby preventing conflict situations and dangerous maneuvers. Good shoes, sure-footedness and a head for heights are recommended for the ascent.
