    Description
    Similaun (Niederjoch)
    Description

Between the Austrian Ötztal and the Schnalstal in South Tyrol there are two alpine transitions: the Niederjoch and the Hochjoch. In combination they result in a fumlinante and unique singletrail tour for well-trained riding technicians.

The adventure begins in Vent at the top of the Ötztal valley. The village is the starting point for the ascent through the Niedertal up to the Similaun hut. The 600 meters of altitude difference to the Martin-Busch hut are relatively leisurely to overcome, they lead over a well-developed gravel road. Then it gets crisp, while the remaining 500 meters of altitude is pushing and in phases carrying announced. In contrast to earlier times, there is no glacier passage anymore. On the Niederjoch (3017 meters above sea level) there is an extensive break before we go down to the Schnalstal on the Italian side. The first meters are set and not rideable. After a rocky section, however, this changes, and the path leads rumpy but feasible through the high alpine terrain. As the distance increases, the area becomes greener and the path more fluid, and finally you reach the village of Vernagt on the banks of the reservoir of the same name. On the main road you now roll up the valley to Kurzras, where the second tour de force begins. If you are lucky, you can avoid the ascent to the Teufelsegghütte with the chairlift, otherwise there is a tough ascent on steep gravel roads. In this way, a little over 800 metres of altitude difference come together up to the Hochjoch, from where the descent back to the Ötztal valley begins. For these the same characteristics apply as for the trail down from the Similaun hut: technical, exposed, alpine, but for good riders almost continuous rideable. On this trail through the elongated Rofental valley you return to Vent.

Tip: ride the tour in two days and spend the night in the Similaun hut, for example.
