    Monte Carza
    Description

Thanks to military positions from both world wars, some wonderful viewing points for Lake Maggiore can be accessed by bike. This includes the Monte Carza above Cannobio, which can be combined with an additional loop over the Monte Spalavera.

The route starts with six kilometres on the lakeside road from Cannobio to Cannero. In the village you turn right onto the little mountain road to Trarego, quickly gaining altitude . The view over Lake Maggiore gets better and better with every metre covered. You eventually reach the mountain village of Trarego, and from here take a concrete road up to the mountain road that you left  just before the village. The ascent is still not complete and you follow the little road up to Il Colle. At this point, a feat of strength is needed to reach the Monte Spalavera. The military trail and later a single track are easy to ride on, and lead up to the summit with a fantastic view towards Lake Maggiore and across to the Valle Grande. After a rest at the summit, the first singletrack descent is quite demanding at first with some twists and turns, but becoming smoother and smoother until it becomes a gravel path down to the end of the concrete road used for the ascent. Then there›s a bit more of a climb - to the highest point on the road, then along a gravel path and finally a single track up to the Monte Pian Bello. This is the starting point for the long descent to Cannobio, first on a wonderful single track along the ridge and then with a short ascent on the other side to Monte Carzo. This section provides excellent views down to Lake Maggiore. A varied single track leads down to Viggiona, from where you return to Cannobio along a Roman road.

    Tips:

    • If the route is too long, leave the Monte Spalavera and head straight from the climb up to Monte Carzo.
    • Technically very good drivers take the single trail from Monte Carzo via Prato Rotondo down to Cannobio. Attention: this path is very demanding.
