    Mont Avril
    Description

Mont Avril with its spectacular summit flank is a truly special mountain bike destination. The ascent is rock hard, but downhill will set off plenty of fireworks for those who have mastered their technique. The tours on the Italian side offer the option to take a shuttle uphill and what seems like an endless singletrail downhill to the centre of Aosta.

Without the shuttle, the climb from Aosta to Mont Avril is almost impossible. Normally, you‘d take the shuttle to Champillon and then follow the trail along an aqueduct. Warning: this route is frequented by hikers in high season. Far back in the valley, you‘ll steer briefly downhill on a trail to the gravel road which will take you to Alp Thoules. For the rest of the tour, you‘ll have to carry the bike on your shoulders. You‘ll pass the Fenêtre de Durand and then fight your way up to the summit to the left. 3347 meters above sea level. Mont Avril is one of the highest points in the Alps that can be reached by mountain bike. And the effort is worth it. You‘ll descend the same way you just climbed, but now you have all the fun of surfing on gravel as you make the steep descent. The more difficult section of the descent begins after Fenêtre de Durand, along the same route you climbed until you reach Thoules. Just past the lane, follow the flowy trail on the left side to the small reservoir. This is where the hugely challenging path to Pont or Glacier. You‘ve completed the tough part of the descent! On the right side of the valley, you‘ll now roll out of the valley along an aqueduct, through a long tunnel (have a headlamp!), and finally reaching Valpelline. Then the road to Aosta is almost flat as you pass Roisan to Porossan, followed by a couple of short, but fun singletrails as you make you way into Aosta.
