    Col Lauson
    Description

3296 metres above sea level: that‘s the highest point for a mountain bike tour. It can be done with the Col Lauson from Valsavarenche to Cogne. The tour is a high alpine spectacle beyond compare with flowy trails that pass through rough, rocky terrain. Properly fit mountain bikers can ride the singletrail ascent, but most will need to push the 1645 vertical metres up to the pass.

The climb begins at Eau Rousse, slightly above Valsavarenche, with the style it has throughout: narrow but well developed, steep but basically rideable. The trail initially leads through the dense pine forest, but after Alp Levionaz Dessous, the terrain becomes more alpine. The path is so well maintained that you can, in theory, ride almost all the way up to the top of Col Lauson. The pass is located at almost 3300 metres above sea level, indisputably one of the highest points in the Alps that can be reached by mountain bike. On the side of the valley beyond, the trail continues to be of the same quality: it‘s a first-class ride, slightly exposed at the top, then in a flowy zigzag down to Rifugio Vittorio Sella. We pass by the chance to go to the hut, instead going uphill at the left to take the Colle della Rossa another 340 vertical metres, this time pushing. The reason for continuing to ascend: it‘s replaces the less attractive route from the Rifugio down to Cogne with a singletrail descent past Les Ors. You‘ll have 1650 metres of singletrail to ride, with the fun only over in Cogne for the time being. Due to the lack of alternatives, it‘s then back to Aosta on the main road. If you‘re in a hurry or have no strength left, you can follow the roads as far as Aosta. Or you can take another trail by switching sides of the valley at Pondel on the historic bridge and ascending a bit on the opposite side so that you can ride on trails to Aymavilles. From there, you get back on the main road and later on the bike path for an easy ride back to Aosta.
