    Description

The Col Bassac at 3154 metres above sea level is one of the mountain passes in the Aosta Valley offering high-alpine thrills. You‘ll have to carry the bike extensively as you make your way up, but the downhill is more fun that you‘d believe possible, assuming you‘ve got a good and safe riding technique.

The route to the Col Bassac starts far down in the Valgrisenche at the parking lot at the end of the asphalt road. It‘s advisable to take a shuttle up here because the remaining climb is tough enough. At the parking lot, ride onto the gravel road that runs along the steep valley floor up towards Rifugio Mario Bezzi. This lane turns into a single trail on which you‘ll have to carry your bike to reach the hut. But, this is actually where the ascent really starts. Immediately after the hut, turn left onto a steep path until it temporarily becomes flatter on a moraine. On the last stretch up to the pass, you‘ll have another 250 metres to carry your bike up. But the effort is worth it: on the other side of the pass, an excellent single track leads down to the valley. High alpine, sometimes a bit rough and tricky, but easy to ride for experienced mountain bikers. Further down, the terrain becomes steeper, with a few easy-to-navigate serpentines along the way, as you head down into the depths. By the point the valley floor is already visible, a short traverse follows through rocky terrain. The path is narrow and secured with hand ropes. You‘ll need to push the bike here for a few metres out of safety reasons. After the traverse, you‘ll enjoy another fantastic downhill as fun as the one you just completed. Finally, you will reach the car park at the end of the road in Val di Rhêmes, where the world-class descent comes to an end. The way back to the Valley of Aosta is over the main road, staying on the left side of the valley until you‘re far down. You can then take a couple of singletrails down to Villeneuve.
